UK skip sizes at a glance

Sizes are nominal cubic yards, not guaranteed internal dimensions. Operators may stock different combinations. Bag counts are a rough comparison using ordinary refuse sacks, not a promise of fit.

Can I put this in a skip?

This answers whether an item usually suits an ordinary mixed-waste skip. Specialist containers and individual operators have different rules.

How the recommendation works

We total rough item volumes, or estimate a job or measured pile, convert cubic metres to cubic yards (1 yd³ ≈ 0.765 m³), then add a 20% sizing allowance for imperfect packing and measurement error. That allowance is our conservative planning choice, not an industry guarantee. A measured loose pile gets the same allowance; a neatly stacked pile is adjusted down slightly first.

We choose the first commonly sold skip size above that adjusted volume: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 or 12 yards. Three- and five-yard models are not available from every operator. If a heavy load is too big for a sensible single small skip, we say so instead of recommending a huge skip that may be too heavy to lift. Beyond 12 yards, ask about multiple skips or commercial collection.

Item estimates vary because furniture shape, dismantling, packing and moisture vary. Our bin-bag equivalents use roughly ten standard refuse sacks per nominal cubic yard as a visual guide; actual bag sizes and packing vary widely.

Before you orderTell your supplier exactly what is in the load and where the skip will sit. Ask them to confirm the internal dimensions, weight allowance, accepted materials and any extra charges. A skip on a public road requires a permit; the operator or council can explain who arranges it.
Common questions

Skip-size questions answered

What size skip is right for a bathroom renovation?

A 4-yard skip is a reasonable starting point for a modest bathroom, but tiles and rubble can be heavy. Add the actual materials above and check the supplier’s weight allowance. Keep plasterboard out of an ordinary mixed load unless the operator confirms its arrangements.

Can I fill a 12-yard skip with soil or rubble?

Do not assume so. Dense waste may reach the vehicle’s lifting or legal load limit before a large skip is full. Many operators restrict large skips to light waste. Ask about a smaller heavy-waste skip, multiple swaps or another suitable service.

How many bin bags fit in a skip?

As a broad visual guide, a 2-yard skip might hold about 20–30 refuse sacks, a 4-yard about 30–50, a 6-yard about 50–70, and an 8-yard about 60–90. Bag size, density and packing make these approximate only.

Does a mattress count as POPs upholstered seating?

No. The Environment Agency’s specific upholstered domestic seating guidance explicitly excludes mattresses. Your skip operator may still restrict mattresses or charge separately.

What if the answer falls between sizes?

The calculator already adds a 20% allowance. For light, bulky waste, the next size up may be wise if you expect more items. For heavy waste, a larger skip can be the wrong answer—check the weight allowance instead.

Evidence and scope

Sources and limitations

We use public UK operator size guides for broad capacities, and official England guidance for waste handling. This tool is independent, does not hire skips, and does not know any specific operator’s stock, dimensions, prices or acceptance policy. Waste rules differ across UK nations; the POPs and gypsum notes here cite Environment Agency guidance for England. Last reviewed 2 October 2026.
